이 논문은 화엄경 선재동자의 순례를 전반적으로 고찰해 본 것이다. 먼저 순례의 주체자인 선재동자의 모습과 선재가 菩提心을 일으키고 菩薩道를 구하여 이루게 되는 순례의 동기, 그리고 순례의 여정에서 지치거나 피로한 마음을 내지 않고 선지식의 가르침을 따르는 그 자세를 주시해 보았다. 이어서 문수보살로부터 보현보살에 이르기까지 선재가 만나는 53선지식 뿐 아니라, 특히 선지식의 처소인 순례지를 주목하고, 그 순례로 얻어지는 공덕을 살펴보았다. 선재의 선지식 순례는 선재와 선지식이 다르지 않으며 몸과 세계가 둘이 아니며, 인과가 동시임을 잘 보여주고 있다. 순례지는 크게 남인도의 해안지역과, 석가모니 부처님의 재세시 발자취가 남아있는 성지로 나뉜다. 이는 화엄경의 편찬지와 교설된 내용을 반영한 것이다. 선재는 그 양대 지역을 오가며 각 계층의 선지식을 두루 예방하여 해탈법문을 듣고, 다양한 삶의 방식을 통해 다함께 행복하게 되는 보살도를 펼쳐 보이고 있다. ‘法界에 들어감’ 또는 ‘불가사의한 해탈경계에 들어가는 보현행원’ 이라고 일컬어지는 선재의 순례를 통하여, 해탈세계인 법계에 들어가는 방편이 곧 보현행원일 뿐 아니라, 법계에서 자재하는 것 또한 보살의 길을 가는 것이고 보현행원의 실천이며 회향임을 알 수 있다.
This paper broadly surveys the pilgrimage of Sudhana(善財) in the chapter of Entering into the dharmadhātu in Avataṃsaka Sūtra (the Flower Adornment Sūtra). First of all, this research carefully focuses on the following aspects: (1) Sudhana as a protagonist of the pilgrimage, (2) Sudhana’s motivation for the pilgrimage to arouse bodhi-mind and to find the bodhisattva’s paths, and Sudhana’s unyielding attitude to follow the dharma teachings of the virtuous counsellors. In addition to (3)the fifty three virtuous counsellors, including Mañjuśri bodhisattva(文殊師利菩薩) and Samantabhadra bodhisattva(普賢菩薩), related places and (4)merits of the pilgrimage are examined in the discussion. Sudhana’s pilgrimage demonstrates that Sudhana and his counsellors have no difference, his body and the world can not be dual, and cause and effect are simultaneous. The pilgrimage sites include coastal regions of south India and sacred places where Śākyamuni Buddha left his footsteps while he was staying in this world. Those sites are related to the teachings proclaimed in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra and the places where the sūtra was redacted. Sudhana continuously visits the sites in the two regions and meets each virtuous counsellor to receive dharma instructions for liberation. He also, with all his relentless efforts and practices, reveals the bodhisatta paths through which all sentient beings become happy in their own ways. Samantabhadra’ vow and practice is the practical means for entering the liberated world, or dharmadhātu, through Sudhana’s pilgrimage, which means ‘Entering into the dharmadhātu’ and ‘Samantabhadra’s practice and vow to enter the inconceivable realm of liberation.’ It should also be noted that being self-existent in the dharmadhātu and walking on the bodhisattva’s path means nothing different from the practice of Samantabhadra’s vow and the sharing of all merits with others.
