摘要
본고는 테라와다 불교의 의미와 역사적인 배경에 대해서 살펴보고 있다. 테라와다란 ‘존경받는 분의 가르침’을 보수적으로 지켜나가는 교리라고 이해할 수 있다. 테라와다 불교는 출가자의 생활규범에 있어 붓다의 가르침을 보수적으로 지켜나가야 한다는 무리이다. 이들 테라와다는 결집이라는 과정을 통해 경율론 삼장에 대한 엄격함을 유지해 나아갔으며, 가르침에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 분석과 해체라는 과정을 통해, 이성적이고 논리적인 종교가 될 수 있도록 노력해갔다. 테라와다 불교는 스리랑카를 중심으로 미얀마, 태국 등의 동남아시아 국가들 사이에서 유지되어 왔다. 테라와다 불교국가들은 내부의 분열이나 외세의 침략에 의해 승단의 맥이 끊어진 경우에 서로의 국가에 구족계를 요청하고 전달해 주는 등의 과정을 통해 불교를 유지해 나아갔다. 이와 같은 노력으로 말미암아, 한 국가 안에서 테라와다의 맥이 끊어지는 경우는 있었으나 테라와다 불교국가들 사이에서 테라와다의 흐름이 끊어지는 경우는 없었다. 오늘날의 테라와다 불교는 사부대중을 통하여 보다 이성적이고 합리적으로 다가갈 수 있도록 붓다의 가르침을 고스란히 보존하기 위한 노력한 산물이라고 볼 수 있다.
This study focuses on the meaning of Theravāda Buddhism and its historical background. The term of Theravāda means ‘Doctrine of Elders.’ Elders indicate the senior monks who preserve tradition. Theravāda is the school of Buddhism preserves now in Sri Lanka and is parts of continental southeast Asia. It reached to Sri Lanka from India near 250 BC. And in the 11th century, Theravāda Buddhism diffused to Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. Distinctions of Theravāda Buddhism are the use of Pāli as its main sacred language and psychological analysis. Theravāda Buddhists specified that they were Vibbajja-vādin(analysts), and they delighted in classifying psychological states. Moreover, Theravāda monks adhere to the Pāli version of the Pātimokkha with its 227 rules. Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand may be called Buddhist societies in a sense that cannot be applied elsewhere. During a history of the Theravāda Buddhism, Myanmar monks sent a delegation to Sri Lanka to receive the Sri Lanka ordination. And Sri Lanka they also accepted ordination ceremony from Myanmar and Thailand purposely. Therefore, it is clear that Theravādin ordination tradition was toaccept in other countries of its own necessity to re import it when need arose
