From time immemorial, the art created by humans the world round has represented light in the plastic arts through depictions of rings, beams and flames. In the murals at Dunhuang from the Sui dynasty, the painters explored the effects of the light radiating from the body of Buddha with great energy and from various perspectives. Subtle changes of color were used to create wonderful senses of light in Sui dynasty art, the effects of which are made particularly vivid by the large flame patterns that were used in various niches to highlight the force and awe exuded by the aura radiated by the Buddha.
