「상권」과 「하권」 두 권으로 구성된 『범망경』이 중국에서 만들어진 문헌이라는 점에 대해 학자들 사이에 이견(異見)은 없다. 그렇다면 이 책이 누군가에 의해 만들어진 이상, 그 속에는 만든 이의 의도가 들어있을 것이다. 그 의도는 무엇인가? 바꾸어 말하면, 이 책 속에는 어떤 사상들이 들어 있을까? 필자는 기존의 연구 성과를 계승하여, 『범망경』 속에 담긴 대승 사상을 일곱 가지로 요약했다. 그렇다면 과연 『범망경』이 출현하게 된 이유가 일곱 가지만인가? 필자가 보기에 『범망경』 출현에는 특별한 의도가 있다. 그럼 그 의도가 무엇인가? 이 물음에 답을 찾기 위하여 필자는 「상권」과 「하권」 사이의 ‘관계’에 주목하였다. 「상권」에는 계율에 관한 이야기는 전혀 없고, 석가모니 자신은 심지(心地)를 수행해서 부처가 되었음을 고백하고, 동시에 또 거기에 도달하기 위한 40단계의 과정을 소상하게 설명하고 있다. 반면 「하권」에는 10종의 무거운 죄와, 48종의 가벼운 죄에 대하여 조목조목 설명하고 있다. 그런데 여기서 필자는 「하권」의 앞부분 속에, 「상권」과 「하권」을 연결시키는 중요한 이야기가 있다는 사실을 발견했다. 그 이야기란, 석가모니는 심지(心地) 수행을 시작하는 던 첫 단계에서 ‘광명금강보계(光明金剛寶戒)’를 항상 암송했는데, 바로 이 계로부터 10종의 무거운 죄와 48종의 가벼운 죄에 대한 계목(戒目)이 생겨났다고 하는 이야기이다. 필자는 바로 이 이야기에 주목하여 다음과 같은 결론을 내렸다. 즉 ‘심지 수행’과 ‘계율 실천’ 사이에는 밀접한 관계가 있고, 더 나아가 이 두 관계를 경전의 형식을 빌려 널리 주장하기 위해서 법성(法性) 사상을 선양하려는 누군가가 『범망경』을 편집했다. 『화엄경』과 『대승기신론』에 의거하여 기존에 이미 구축된 법성(法性) 사상 위에, 기존의 대승 율장에 나오는 계율의 조목을 연결시킴으로써, 계율 실천의 이론적 근거를 마련했다. 즉, 계율의 근거를 심지 수행으로부터 찾은 것이다.
There is no disagreement among scholars on the fact that Brahmajāla-Sutta(『梵網經 ; Fan wang jing』), consisted of two volumes, was made in China. If this book was created by someone at least, there would be author's intent. What is the intention of writing the book? In other words, what are the main thoughts in these volumes? Succeeding the previous research results, I summarize Brahmajāla-Sutta into 7 main ideas. In my opinion, there might be a special intention to produce the Brahmajāla-Sutta. What is its intent? To find the answer to this question, I focus on the relationship between the first and second volumes. The first volume does not give a talk on the precepts, but makes a confession of Buddha's self-discipline and explains the 40 steps to become Buddha. The second volume explains about 10 grave charges and 48 minor offenses. I notice that it is in front of the second volume that there is an important story, which connects the first and second volumes. It is the story that Buddha has repeated ‘guang ming jin gang bao jie(光明金剛寶戒)’ from memory whenever he starts to discipline his mind, and the commandments of 10 grave charges and 48 minor offenses have come into being from that. I focus on the story and conclude the following: There has been a close relationship between mind practice and practical commandments, and someone, who had the theory of dharmatā, compiled the Brahmajāla-Sutta in order to argue widely about the relationship. The editors provided theoretical foundations of practical commandments by connecting the Buddhist commandments with the existing traditional Mahayana precepts, under the provision of dharmatā thought, according to Hua yan jing(『華嚴經』) and Da cheng qi xin lun(『大乘起信論』). Therefore, mind practice has become a foundation for the commandments.
