Because of the creation and application of Tibetan language,the gradual development of carving art,and the invention of Tibetan paper,when wood engraving printing was introduced from the hinterland into Tibet in the early 15 th century,it soon became very popular and had a great influence on the production and spreading of the knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism. In addition,the printing and circulation of a large number of Buddhist classics also functioned as communicational ties between the hinterland and Tibet as well as the ties of cultural communication between Tibetans and other ethnic groups. Therefore,the application of wood engraving printing in Tibet is of epoch-making significance in both the history of science and technology and the history of cultural development.
