摘要
『수심결』을 중심으로 한 본 연구는 지눌의 사상을 현대적으로 재해석하고 이를 마음공부에 활용할 수 있는 매개가 될 수 있도록 하는데 의의를 두었다. 본 연구는 크게 세 가지 관점에서 시도되었다. 첫째, 『수심결』에 나타난 구조를 마음공부의 과정으로 분석하였다. 9문9답 가운데 깨달음에 해당하는 6번째의 문답을 기준으로 ‘발심 → 바른 견해 → 방편 → 깨달음(돈오) → 바른 견해(점수)’의 마음공부 과정이 나타나고 있음을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 바른 견해는 깨달음을 얻기 전에도 필요한 것이지만 깨달음을 얻고 나서도 여전히 요구되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 보조지눌이 말한 공적영지와 공적영지를 반조하는 ‘반문여문성(返聞汝聞性)’에 대하여 살펴보았다. 공적영지는 주객을 포괄하는 심층의 본성을 말한다. 마음공부를 통해 공적영지를 깨닫는다는 것은 주관적 심성의 본원을 탐색하는 것이 아니라 바로 그 찾고 구하는 마음을 반조하여 주객을 포괄하는 공적영지심을 확인하는 것이다. 반문여문성이란 실체로서의 소리란 존재하지 않으며 그러한 소리를 듣는 자의 공성을 깨닫는 것이다. 셋째로 『수심결』에 나타난 돈오의 의미를 회광반조의 구조를 통해 분석하였다. 보조지눌의 돈오는 깨달음의 극적인 체험을 중시하는 것이라기보다 발심과 바른 이해를 통하여 본지(本地)를 확인하는 것이다. 여기서 중요한 것은 깨달음을 수행의 결과로만 보는 수직적 구도가 아닌 발심과 바른 견해를 통해 이루어지는 수평적 구도로 이해할 수 있다는 것이다. 즉, 흔히 수행의 결과로 이해되는 깨달음이 초월적인 경험이라기보다는 발심의 과정과 맞물려 존재하고 있음을 말한다. 이러한 맥락에서 깨달음을 위해 발심하고 바른 견해를 이루어나가는 행위는 깨달음의 극적 체험을 통해 소외되지 않는다.
This study, which focuses on the Susimgyeol, is intended to reinterpret the ideas of modernism and to use them as a medium to do Mind Practice. In particular, the structure, process, and significance of Mind Practice were interpreted modernly, centering on the Susimgyeol. This study was attempted from three major perspectives. First, I analyzed the structure shown in the Susimgyeol by Mind Practice. Based on the sixth question that corresponds to enlightenment among the nine questions and answers, I examined that the process of Mind Practice ‘inspiring mind → right view → method → sudden enlightenment → right view (gradual cultivation)’ appeared. Through this, I could grasp the importance of inspiring mind and right view. The right view needs to be considered important in that it is necessary before enlightenment, but still required after enlightenment. Second, I examined the ‘Empty-Spiritual-Knowledge’ and ‘Listen back to your Buddha nature’ by Jinul. ‘Empty-Spiritual-Knowledge’ refers to the in-depth nature encompassing the subjects and objects. The realization of the ‘Empty-Spiritual-Knowledge’ through the practice of Mind is not a search for the subject of the subjective mind, but a confirmation of the ‘Empty-Spiritual-Knowledge’ that encompasses the subjects and objects by reflecting the seeking mind. Jinul pointed out that through the action of seeing, hearing, and speaking, the mind of the ‘Empty-Spiritual-Knowledge’ is the questioner itself who asks questions, ‘Listen back to your Buddha nature’ means that there is no sound as reality, and that it is the ‘Empty-Spiritual-Knowledge’ of the listener. Third, the meaning of sudden enlightenment in the Susimgyeol was analyzed through the structure of reflecting on the mind. Gijunul's Sudden enlightenment is not about emphasizing the dramatic experience of enlightenment, but confirming Buddha nature through inspiring mind and right view. In other words, enlightenment, often understood as a result of practice, is associated with the process of inspiring mind rather than a transcendent experience. In this context, the act of finding out the right view for enlightenment is not alienated through the sudden enlightenment.
