摘要
근대 일본불교는 소위 전시교학을 만들어 자신의 신도들이 전쟁에 참여하도록 독려하였다. 일본선종은 근대 초기 재가신도들의 일상의 지침인 「조동종수증의(曹洞宗修証儀)」를 통해 전시교학의 기반을 구축했다. 선종의 대외전쟁 참여의 정당성은 이처럼 교의의 사회화 과정을 통해 이루어졌다. 본 논문에서는 전시교학과 관계가 깊은 전쟁선(戰爭禪)에 대해 탐구하고자 한다. 비판받아 마땅한 전쟁선은 근본적으로 윤리적 한계를 지니고 있다. 전쟁선의 사상은 일본전통의 무사도에 기반하고 있다. 일본 중세를 연 막부(幕府)의 실권자를 포함한 무사는 특별한 사회계급을 형성했다. 사회가 안정된 에도막부(江戸幕府) 에서는 무사들의 여러 지침서가 등장한다. 그 중의 하나가 『하가쿠레(葉隠れ)』다. 그 내용에서 불교 생사관의 영향을 엿볼 수 있지만, 불교의 불살생의 가르침은 영향을 주지못했음을 알 수 있다. 이는 정권이 바뀌어 제국주의로 변모해 가는 근대에 이르러서도마차가지였다. 비판받아 마땅한 전쟁선은 근본적으로 윤리적 한계를 지니고 있다. 그 점은 크게 두 가지로 볼 수 있다. 첫째는 천황을 정점으로 한 근대봉건주의와 조직적 교단주의다. 선종은 다른 불교계와 마찬가지로 국체론(國體論)을 지지함으로써 근대국가의 이데올로기에 정당성을 부여한 것이다. 또한 관념적 선으로 인해 자아의 초월에만 매몰되어 현실 윤리를 부정하였다. 두 번째로는 일살다생(一殺多生), 즉 한 사람을 죽임으로써 다수를 살린다는 논리로써 전쟁을 긍정한 점이다. 불교의 전통인 불살생계를 무너뜨렸다. 불교의 생명인 이 계율을 무너뜨림으로써 불교 자체의 부정을 가져왔다. 이처럼 일본선종의 윤리는 근대국가체제 내에서 파탄 난 것으로 볼 수 있다.
This study is a reflective study of the history that modern Japanese Zen Buddhism came to concentrated on nationalism and fell into the world of militarism and fascism. Modern Japanese Buddhism created so-called Senjikyōgaku and encouraged its believers to participate in the war. It was a serious distortion of illegalities and, at the same time, an act of betraying one's doctrine. the Zen Buddhism was also same. They established the basis for Senjikyōgaku through the 「Sotōshū-susyōgi」, which was the daily guide for the believers in the early modern times. The legitimacy of the Zen Buddhism participating in the wars against foreign powers was achieved through this process of socializing the doctrine like this. In this paper, taking a step further, it will seek Sentō-zen that is deeply related to Senjikyōgaku. The thought of Sentō-zen is based on Bushido, a Japanese tradition. Bushi (the warrior) including the power-holders in Bakuhu which opened the Japanese middle ages was formed the special social class. In the Edo period thast the society became stable, the various guidelines for warriors were emerging. One of them is 『Hagakure』. The Buddhist view of life and death influenced the content, but the teachings of Buddhist ahimsa did not. This was no different in the modern era when the regime changed and turned into imperialism. The Sentō-zen that deserves criticism has ethical limitations fundamentally. There are three ways at the point. First, it is modern feudalism with the Japanese emperor at its peak. The Zen Buddhism gave the justification for the ideology of modern countries as supporting Kokutairon as in other Buddhists. Secondly, it is a logic affirming the war as Issatsutashō, that’s is a logic of killing one person saves the majority. This is what brought down the Buddhist tradition, the ahimsa system. Finally, this is the denial of real ethics through the transcendence of self. It is that the justice of Buddhism, that is deconstructing of false and reveal of truth, was broken down by ignoring all irrationality and injustice and falling into the ideal world of Zen. Like this, the ethics of the Japanese Zen Buddhism was destroyed within the modern state system.
