| 摘要 | 이 논문의 목적은 인도 논리학사에서 가장 강렬한 이론인 내주연론(內周延論, antar vyāptivāda)을 제시했던 후기 인도불교논사 라뜨나까라샨띠(Ratnākaraśānti, ca.970-1030)와 그의 저서 『쁘라즈냐빠라미따우빠데샤』(Prajñāpāramitopadeśa, 『般若波羅蜜多論』, 이하 PPU)에 관한 문헌학적 검토와 분석을 국내 최초로 제시하기 위함이다. 라뜨나까라샨띠의 PPU는 후기 대승불교의 철학적 이론과 실천적 측면을 가로지르는 단연 군계일학(群鷄一鶴)의 논서임에 틀림없다. 한편, 이 논서가 주는 함의를 가츠라 쇼류(桂紹隆)를 비롯한 일본의 학자들은 이미 알아차렸고, 그들은 1970년대부터 이 논서(*티벳본)에 대한 체계적 연구를 시작했다. 이후 오랜 세월이 흘러, 가츠라를 필두로 한 일본의 신진학자들은 중국 티벳학 연구소 루 홍(Luo Hong, 羅鴻)의 도움으로 지난 2017년 캐나다 세계불교학술대회에서 새롭게 발견된 범본 PPU 연구에 대한 첫 발표회를 가졌다. 이 범본 PPU 교정본은 루 홍에 의해 조만간 출간 예정이고, 따라서 기존의 티벳본을 중심으로 한 PPU 연구의 획기적 전환을 예고하고 있다.
고전인도 중기 불교논사 그룹에 속하는 중관학파의 샨따락시따(Śāntarakṣita)와 까말라쉴라(Kamalaśīla)는 후기 불교논사 그룹에 속하는 유식학파의 라뜨나까라샨띠·즈냐나슈리미뜨라(Jñānaśrimitra) ․ 라뜨나끼르띠(Ratnakīrti)에게 사상적으로 지대한 영향을 주었고, 이들은 유상-무상 논쟁, 내·외주연론 논쟁, 그리고 순간적 존재의 논증에 이르기까지 불교학에서 가장 난해하고 복잡한 인식론 체계를 확립시켰다. 따라서 이들의 주장과 견해는 상호 교섭과 논쟁을 거쳐 복합적 체계의 중관-유가행파 혹은 무상·유상지식론자 등으로 다양한 명칭으로 불러지게 되었다. 후기 유가행파의 논서들은 대체로 ‘수습’(bhāvanā)을 통한 ‘지혜의 완성’(prajñāpāramita)과 ‘요가행자의 증지[깨달음]’(yogipratyakṣa)에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 다시 말해, 그들은 그간 다소 사변적으로 비췄던 종래의 불교인식론 ․ 논리학 체계들을 불교의 근본 목적에 부합하는 요가 수행의 실천적 측면으로 논의를 이끌어낸다. 이러한 형태를 가장 잘 표현한 논서가 바로 라뜨나까라샨띠의 『쁘라즈냐빠라미따우빠데샤』(PPU)이다.
이에 본 논문은 한국 불교학에 있어 대승후기 불교[밀교]논사 라뜨나까라샨띠에 대한 본격적인 연구를 위한 초석(礎石)을 마련하기 위해, 본론의Ⅱ장에서 라뜨나까라샨띠에 대한 세계적 연구 성과물들과 그의 저술들(*밀교부 제외)을 선행 검토하고, 이어서 Ⅲ장에서 범본 PPU의 전체 시놉시스(synopsis)와 인용 출처를 통한 문헌학적 검토를 진행해 PPU에 대한 전체적인 조망을 시도하고자 한다.
This article aims to introduce some of the results of new academic research on Ratnākaraśānti’s Prajñāpāramitopadeśa (PPU) - which were presented and caused quite a sensation for the area of Buddhist epistemology and logic at the 18th IABS Conference (Toronto, August 20-25, 2017) - and to establish a cornerstone for the hitherto unknown study of Ratnākaraśānti in Korea for the first time.
As we know, the Sanskrit critical edition of the PPU, which will be eventually published by Dr. Luo Hong(羅鴻) of the China Tibetology Research Centre, would trigger a phase of investigation into Ratnākaraśānti(ca.970-1030) and his works. Ratnākaraśānti authored three manuals on late Indian Yogācāra philosophy, all of which had been available only in Tibetan until now.
At the conference, the members of Katsura Shoryu(桂紹隆)’s panel, which included Shiga Kiyokuni(志賀浄邦), Nishiyama Ryo(西山亮), Hayashima Satoshi(早島慧), Kataoka Kei(片 岡啓), announced new studies on Ratnākaraśānti’s PPU. Interestingly, all of them utilized new Sanskrit materials kindly provided by Luo Hong.
Their presentation topics were as follows:
• A New Synopsis of the PPU,
• The Four Yoga Stages of the PPU,
• Common scriptural sources by Ratnākaraśānti and Kamalaśīla, • Mādhyamikas in the PPU,
• Trisvabhāva in the PPU, Ratnākaraśānti on Prakāśa,
• [an unpublished work of Luo Hong’s] Svasaṃvedana in the PPU.
The study on Ratnākaraśānti’s position as well as of the PPU is unfamiliar to Buddhist academic circles in Korea.
Therefore, I will first present observations on Ratnākaraśānti, his works, and on the Sanskrit PPU, often relying on Katsura’s and his panel members’ papers. I will then focus on elucidating the relations between Ratnākaraśāti, Jñānaśrimitra, and Ratnakīrti taking reference to controversial debates between the sākāravāda vs. nirākāravāda, antarvyāptivāda vs. bahirvyāptivāda, and kṣaṇabhāṅgasiddhi.
