본 논문은 국제적 비파사나 명상 네트워크인 고엥카의 “비파사나 명상 센터”(Vipassana Meditation Center)의 운영 방식을 주목하여, 그 운영의 원칙 속에 녹아서 작동하는 초기불교의 이념을 분석해 보임으로써, 가르치는 법(法, Dharma)의 내용과 이 수행프로그램을 운영하는 방식 간에 존재하는 일관성이 이 단체를 세계적인 조직으로 성장하게 한 원동력이 되었음을 보이고자 한다. 이 프로그램은 정교한 체계와 광범한 조직을 가지고 있으며, 그 운영의 원칙은 프로그램의 내용과 상관성을 가지며 명실상부하게 이루어지고 있다. 열흘간의 수행프로그램을 통해 수련생들은 명상법과 불교의 가르침을 배우고 느끼며, 궁극적으로 프로그램 운영의 원칙이 불교의 담마(Dhamma)에 기반하고 있음을 체험한다. 이를 통해 프로그램에 대해 존경 뿐 만 아니라 나아가 여기서 가르치는 명상법의 유효성도 받아들이게 된다. 즉 주도하는 이념과 실천 방식 간에 유기적인 관련이 있는가의 여부에서 그 체제의 진정성에 대한 신뢰가 발생한다. 리더십은 외부적 관련을 염두에 두면서 자신의 내면적 가치와 통찰에 걸맞은 방식으로 세계와 주체적으로 접촉하는 기술이라 할 수 있다. 내면적 통찰의 힘을 불교적 가치에서 끌어 내서 자신의 삶 속에서 세계와의 접촉에 적용할 때 ‘불교 리더십’이라고 정의할 수 있다. 불교의 이념과 원칙에 기반하여 삶속에서 실천하는 불교 리더십의 모형을 고엥카 프로그램에서 찾을 수 있다고 본다. 본 논문에서는 고엥카 리더십의 구성요소를 여러 측면에서 분석하였다. 고엥카는 개인적인품과 카리스마의 기반 위에, (1) 도덕성의 함양을 프로그램의 지표로 삼고, (2) 트랜스내셔설하며 다문화적 관점을 포용하는 개방적 문화를 실천하며, (3) 종교적 색채를 지양하는, 합리성과 논리성에 기반한 이념과 실천법을 제시하고, (4) 자칫 교조적으로 전락할 수 있는 수행 환경에서, 불교적 가치와 명상법을 실용적 태도를 가지고 교육함으로써, 세계인들의 마음에 다가갈 수 있었다. 좀 더 구체적인 사항으로, 보시와 공덕과 은혜의 삼원적 체계, 윤리적 실천의 요소, 초종파적 초국가적 다문화적 다언어적 성격, 개인이 아니고 조직이 움직이며 내가 하는 일이 아니고 담마가 하는 일이라는 하심의 정신, 개별성과 공동체, 로칼리티와 보편성 간의 조화, 자율적이고 수평적인 리더십 등을 들 수 있다. 나아가 이상 열거한 운영원칙이 불교의 가르침과 연관성을 가지고 실천되고 있음을 보이고, 이러한 점이 한국 불교의 조직화와 국제화를 입안하는 데에 있어서 큰 시사점을 가질 수 있음도 주장하고자 한다.
This paper analyzes the operating principle of S. N. Goenka’s Vipassana meditation program and shows that the coherency that exists between the underlying ideological principle, which is based on early Buddhist doctrinal concerns, and the way in which this principle is carried out provides the moral confidence and integrity necessary for teaching this program. I would argue that these qualities have become essential and are responsible for the program’s rise to current world prominence, receiving genuine respect from those looking for a rational and practical way of escaping life’s dissatisfaction. In this paper, I define leadership as a method of living a good and meaningful life in consideration of others and the surrounding world. Equipped with a mature insight on the nature of life and the world, which is characterized by transitory and impermanent nature, we can bring about good results in whatever we do through interactions with the outside world. When this power of insight is drawn from the Buddhist value to be applied in real life, it can become known as “Buddhist leadership.” I argue that Goenka’s program provides a good model for Buddhist leadership where Buddhist ideas and principles are applied in real life. This paper will touch on five qualities that enable Goenka’s leadership: (1) personal integrity and charisma, (2) transnational and multicultural considerations, (3) transcendent attitudes toward different religions and ideologies, (4) emphasis on moral integrity, (5) focus on practical and applicable knowledge. In addition, the paper addresses the ternary connections between generosity, merit, and benefit; humility and attitude based on deferring to the anonymous and community working spirit; harmony between locality and universality; and autonomous and horizontal work relations. The aforementioned principles are at work in the meditation program’s organization. I also argue that these points can have great implications on the success of current Korean Buddhist organizations’ internationalization efforts in the present and future.
