This thesis focuses on the study of Eight Realizations of Bodhisattva Sutra, a scripture consisting of spiritual instructions that caution all living beings with the following doctrines: life consists of impermanence, absence of self, suffering and Emptiness; all lives and existence follow the phenomena of arising, abiding, changing and extinction. All encounters occur depend on cause and condition, ultimately come to emptiness without a master. Understanding that the essence of everything in life is impermanent, we as common people should follow the Buddha’s teaching to begin with the Threefold Training: Precept; Meditation; Wisdom to embark on the path of actualizing the eight practices towards enlightenment in the spirit of Bodhisattva and put the following Six Perfections into everyday practice: Giving; Ethics; Patience; Perseverance; Meditation; Wisdom. Meanwhile, one should practice the Four Immeasurables: charity, kind words, meaningful conduct, and consistency, to benefit all sentient beings and bring about actualization for all. The aim is to benefit oneself and others in the spirit of Bodhisattva and deliver oneself and the others to the realm of an enlightened mind and free all living beings from suffering. As a Bodhisattva that helps all living beings steer away from the pain of endless reincarnations, one shall set the sail of compassion and return to this worldly life once again with a benevolent intention. Following the teaching of the scripture, one shall have a clear understanding of the eight practices of awakening, absence of self, reduced desires, content, diligence, wisdom, equality, and serenity in one’s endeavor towards enlightenment. When reaching Buddhahood, one shall return as an enlightened being, “back to the cycle of rebirth to deliver innumerable sentient beings to enlightenment and ride the vehicle of Dharma to the shore of Nirvana.”
As such, the Eight Realizations of Bodhisattva Sutra is a Buddhist scripture that encompasses both Mahāyāna and Theravada thoughts, while serving as a guide for all living beings on their path towards enlightenment. If one can practice the eight practices listed in the scripture, one shall leave the cycle of reincarnations, cease all suffering, and reach Buddhahood. In conclusion, the Eight Realizations of Bodhisattva Sutra is a scripture well worth studying.
