2010년 5월 31일 오후 3시경, 경상북도 군위군 군위읍 사직리의 한 낙동강 강둑에서 문수스님은 분신을 결행하였다. 스님의 죽음에 관한 정황과 유서가 밝혀지면서, 스님의 죽음은 단순한 자살이 아니라 종교적 ‘소신공양(燒身供養)’이라고 평가해야 한다는 의견이 지배적이다. 소신공양은 불교의 다비 전통에서 비롯된 것으로서, 여러 불교문헌에는 소신공양에 관한 이야기가 종종 소개되고 있다. 예를 들면, 빨리 불전에는 인연이야기(Nīdāna-Kathā) 중에 ‘소신공양’이라는 제목의 기록이 있고, 『법화경』에는 일체중생희견보살(一切衆生喜見菩薩)의 소신공양에 관한 기록이 있다. 근래에는 1963년 사이공의 한 거리에서 베트남의 틱쾅둑 스님이 분신하였다. 문수 수님의 소신공양은 이러한 불교 전통의 연장선 위에 위치한다. 문수 스님의 소신공양에는 적어도 다음과 같은 세 가지 의미가 있다고 생각된다. 첫째, 문수스님의 소신공양은 부처님과 법과 뭇 생명에 대한 마지막 법공양이었다. 붓다의 가르침은 괴로운 중생에게 큰 기쁨과 행복을 가져다주기 때문에, 사람들은 그 가르침을 설해준 붓다와 그 법의 은혜에 보답하는 마음으로 예배하고 공양한다. 법공양은 이러한 불교 전통에서 유래한다. 둘째, 문수스님의 소신공양은 ‘생사해탈의 자기검증’이었다. 불교의 최고선인 해탈과 열반은 생사의 속박에서 벗어난 세계이다. 불교의 선가에서는 이러한 해탈과 열반을 스스로 검증하는 전통이 있어 왔다. 셋째, 문수스님의 소신공양은 생산적인 정치적 저항이었다. 그것은 “이명박 정권은 4대강 사업을 즉각 중지하라. 부정부패를 척결하라. 가난하고 소외된 사람을 위해 최선을 다하라!”라는 스님의 유서를 통해 알 수 있다. 문수스님의 소신공양은 우리에게 경각심을 불러 일으켜 준 것만으로도 큰 의미가 있지만, 살아남은 우리의 행동과 실천이 뒤따를 때 그 의미는 더 밝은 빛을 발할 것이다.
About 3 p.m on May 31, 2010, Venerable Moonsoo carried out ‘offering by burning himself’ on the Nakdong river bank which is in Sajik-ri Gunwi-eup, Gunwi-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-Do. After coming out into the open about circumstances of his death and his will, venerable Moon's death became sacred buddhist offering by burning himself, not just suicide. Offering by burning himself is came from cremation which is buddhist tradition and it is introduced in many buddhist literatures. For example, there are some records about ‘offering by burning himself’ in Nidāna-Kathā which is in Pāli Texts and there are some records about Ilche Joongsaeng Heegyun Bodhisattva's offering by burning himself in 『Lotus Sutra』. Recently, Thich Quang Duc, a buddhist priest burned himself to death at the street in Saigong. I think that Venerable Moonsoo inherited this kind of the Offering by burnig himself tradition of Buddhism. Venerable Moonsoo's Offering by burning himself means at least 3 following meanings. Firstly, Venerable Moonsoo's Offering by burnig himself is the last Dharma -offering to the Buddha, Dharma and Sattva. People worship and offer to Buddha who gave the lessons with mind of repaying an obligation for the lessons, because Buddha's lessons give great pleasure and happiness to the sentient beings. Dharma-offering stemmed from this kind of the tradition of Buddhism. Secondly, Venerable Moonsoo's Offering by burning himself was ‘Liberation from samara's self-verification’. Buddhism's summum bonum, Vimukti and Nirvana, is the world which breaks away from the restraint of all sufferings. A Buddist tradition which verifies these Vimukti and Nirvana for oneself has been in the Zen order of Buddhism. Finally, venerable Moonsoo's offering by burning himself was political resistance, which was productive. We can know that through his will which says “The LEE administration should stop the state undertaking about four river immediately! Eradicate corruption! Government should do their best for people who are poor and isolated!”
