摘要
근대불교의 파행은 1868년 신불분리의 여파로 인한 폐불훼석 후, 국체론과의 만남에서 그 자정능력은 물론, 고래로부터 물려받은 왕법불법과 신불습합과 같은 일본불교 고유의 내적유산을 통한 국가와의 긴장감을 상실한 데에 있다고 본다. 이를 고찰하기 위해 먼저 국체론(國體論)의 형성과 불교계의 상황에 대해서 알아보았다. 근대 국체론의 연원은 쇄국정책을 앞세운 미토학(水戸学)에서 천황론을 정점으로 전개되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그리고 미토번(水戸藩)의 폐불훼석이 근대로 확산됨과 아울러 국체론 사회체제를 형성해 갔다. 국체론에 대한 근대불교학의 논리는 여러 종파, 특히 일련종, 정토진종, 선종 등의 전시교학과 연계되어 있음을 볼 수 있다. 본 논고에서는 이를 세 부분으로 나누어 근대불교학에 요청된 과제, 국체론 사회체제 하의 근대불교학의 파행 양상, 마지막으로 군국주의 시대 커다란 지침이 되었던 『국체의 본의』에 나타난 왕법불법론의 구조를 살펴보았다. 이를 계기로 일본 근대불교학의 한계를 인식하고 이에 대한 관점을 새롭게 정립해야 됨을 본다.
The crippled operation of Japanese buddhism in modern is attributed to the loss of capacity of self-cleaning in meeting with Kokutairon, and the loss of tense atmosphere between buddhism and modern nation through inner inheritances of their own like Ohbobuppo(王法佛法) and Shinbutssyugo(神佛習合). This writter studied the formation process and the state of buddhism in modern time for an inquiry into this problems. It can be said that a beginning of modern Kokutairon was taken a new turn in Mitogaku(水戸学) in Mito-Han(水戸蕃) where was given priority to a policy of national isolation policy in political ones. The social system was made with keep in spreading of Haibutsukisyaku(廃仏毀釈) into modern time. We can see that the logic behind Japenese Buddhist was closely connected with the doctrines in war like Nichirensyu(日蓮宗), Zyodosinsyu(浄土真宗), Zensyu(禅宗) etc. This writter studied on the task made by requests to modern buddhism, a aspect of crippled operation of Japanese buddhism below Kokutairon as the social system, and the structure Ohbobuppo with Kokutaino Hongi in which became great guideline in militarism age. It could be set new standpoint with recognition of limit in modern buddhism of Japan through this study.
