Mt. Wu‐Tai Manjusri Belief in Japan started from Kyoki(行基), who was called the incarnation(化身) of Manjusri Bodhisattva in the 7th century. This is due to Kyoki's popular and diverse social projects, and it is an important character of Japan Mt. Wu‐Tai Manjusri Belief. After Kyoki, in the Heian era, two lines of Mt. Wu‐Tai Manjusri Belief including Mount Hiei(比叡山) and southern Buddhism, were unfolded. Among them, the Manjusri society established by Gonjyo(勤操) of southern Buddhism inherited the tradition of Kyoki's popular Manjusri Belief. In the era of Kamakura, the Manjusri Belief of non‐human salvation became popular by Eizon(叡尊) and Ninsho(忍性). The significance of Eizon's the Relief Work for Hinin(非人救濟), while inheriting the ideas of the Manjusri society of southern Buddahism, was that Eizon did his own interpretation and devoted much of his relief to the non‐humans whom the monks in the Kamakura era regarded as no subjects of their mission, which has a big significance. In other words, Manjusri society simply referred to the remedies called ‘paupers’ or ‘solitary men’ as ‘non‐human’ including persons with disabilities and lepers. The characteristic of Japan Mt. Wu‐Tai Manjusri Belief is that the traditional academic Manjusri Belief of hieizon is succeeded, but on the other hand it is understood that the Manjusri Belief of the people originated from Kyoki is running parallel to the Kamakura era.
