잘 알려진 바와 같이 관음시식(觀音施食)은 죽은 자를 위한 불교 의례 중의 하나이다. 여기에서 말하는 시식의 말뜻에는 ‘베풀다’는 의미가 들어있는데, 그 내용에 크게 두 종류가 있다. 하나는 음식을 베푸는 것이고, 다른 하나는 부처님의 말씀을 베푸는 것이다. 불교 의례를 통하여 죽은 자가 두 종류의 베품을 받아 제 스스로가 여섯 갈래의 윤회에서 벗어나 해탈하도록 한다. 이를 위해 남겨진 가족들은 죽은 자를 위해 불경을 독송해주기도 하고, 때로는 선사들의 말씀을 읽어드리기도 한다. 이와 동시에 차를 대접하고 나아가 각종 음식을 대접하기도 한다. 이 중에서도 역시 가장 중요한 것은 죽은 자 스스로가 진리의 말씀을 듣고 번뇌에서 벗어나 해탈하게 하는 것이다. 본 논문은 관음시식에 담긴 철학적 요소를 찾아내는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위해 필자는 먼저 관음시식의 의례 구조를 분석했다. 이와 동시에 그 의례 속에 사용된 가사의 내용을 분석했다. 그 결과 필자는 두 가지 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 관음시식 속에는 불교의 세계관과 인생관이 들어 있는데, 그것은 기본적으로 화엄사상과 선사상 기초하고 있다. 이런 주장을 논증하기 위하여 필자는 각 게송들을 실례로 들어가면서, 그 속에 담긴 사상들을 추출해보았다.
As well known, [Kwan-em-si-sik;觀音施食] is one of the ritual services for the deceased in the Buddhism. Si-sik has the meaning of offering. There are mainly two kinds of offerings. one is the offering of food and the other is the offering of Buddha's teachings. By offering the food and the Buddha's teachings to the deceased through the buddhistic ritual service, It can help the deceased released from the reincarnation of six realms on their own. Family members of the deceased read the Buddhist scriptures or seon masters' words for their beloved. Meanwhile, tea and food offered to the deceased. The most important part of this ritual process is helping the deceased be liberated from affliction by listening to the words of truth. The purpose of the thesis is to look for the philosophical elements in the [Kwan-eum-si-sik]. For that, I analyze the structure of [Kwan-eum-si-sik] ritual and the lyrics sung in the service process as well. As a result, I reach two conclusions: one is the buddhist's view of the world and the other is the buddhist's view of life found in [Kwan-em-si-sik]. Basically, the views are on the basis of Hwa-yen thought and Seon thought. To prove my insistence, I extract some thoughts from the hymns each of which I demonstrate as the example.
