There are currently four engraved niches on the 2-kilometer-long Honglianshan hillside in Podi Village in Qinyuan County, Changzhi City, Shanxi Province. On the south side of niche 4, there is a dated inscription that was likely carved in the fourth year of the Wuding era (546 CE) of the Eastern Wei dynasty. Both the themes and style of the image were largely inherited from similar work from the late Northern Wei dynasty in southeast Shanxi. This dated niche not only provides a reference for dating the Buddhist images of the Northern Dynasties, but also provides important material for discussing how Buddhism spread among the common people.
