전과 전통은 밀접한 연관을 가지고 있다. 고전은 전통의 형성에 기여하고, 전통은 고전을 요청하고 찾는다. 19세기 초 한국은 국가의 정치적 주권은 상실하지만, 민족국가 수립을 위한 주권 탈환에의 노력과 민족의 문화적 정체성 확립의 노력은 계속된 시기이다. 또 이 시기 한국불교는 자기정체성의 확립과 현대사회에의 적응이라는 이 두 상호 모순하기 쉬운 과제를 안고 있었다. 이 두 과제 가운데 전자를 위해 노력한 이들은 선불교의 부흥을 통해서 자신들의 과제를 성취하려고 하였다. 선불교의 정체성을 강조하는 글들을 모은 『禪門撮要』는 19세기 초에 편집되어 전통불교의 수호를 통한 한국불교의 정체성 확립에 노력한 이들의 이론적 기반을 제공하는 역할을 하였다. 전통불교 부흥의 대표적인 인물인 경허와 백용성은 『禪門撮要』의 편집, 번역, 대중적 보급과 깊은 관련이 있다. 『禪門撮要』 하권은 한국 승려들의 글들만 모은 것인데 이는 당시의 민족 문화의 정체성 확립 노력과 관계가 있다. 특히 『禪門撮要』 하권의 반을 차지하는 지눌의 글은 민족주의와 결부되면서 이후 선불교 교리서를 넘어서 한국의 고전이 되었다.
The classics are intimately associated with the tradition of the society. The classics contribute for the formation of the tradition, and the tradition requires and looks for the classics. In the early 19th century, Korea lost her political sovereignty, but her people tried to recover the sovereignty and to establish cultural identity. In the other hand Korean Buddhist society has the two historical tasks: finding of self identity and adapting to the modern society. These two tasks look contradictory and Buddhists are divided in taking over one of these two tasks. Those who gave priority to the finding of self identity believed that their task could be obtained through the resurrection of Seon Buddhism. Sunmunchwalyo is an anthology of the traditional Seon writing which emphasizes the superiority of Seon over doctrinal Buddhism, and is published in 1907. This book provided ideological basis for Seon Buddhism. Geyongheo and Baek Yongsung, the two great advocators of Seon Buddhism in the early 19th century contributed for the compilation, translation, and distribution of this book. Sunmunchwalyo volume two is composed of Korean monks' writings. This has to do with Korean people's efforts to establish cultural identity of Korea of the time. Later Jinul's writings in this volume became one of the representative classic in Korea.
