This bibliographical survey is far from complete or satisfactory. It began as a basic whatis-what list of primary and secondary sources meant to assist me in the process of rendering into English Śikṣānanda’s Chinese translation of the Laṅkāvatārasūtra (to be published in the Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai English Tripiṭaka). Over the years, this grew into a larger file which has been used as a reference material for my seminars on the sutra. Encouraged by the positive reactions coming from my students (bet they just wanted higher grades…) as well as the editorial policy set by Professor Akira Saito allowing for research notes to be included in the newly launched Bulletin of the International Institute for Buddhist Studies, I have decided to revise and update my list. After all, without any comprehensive bibliographical surveys, even an incomplete overview like this might serve, dare I hope, as an aid to further studies on the Laṅkāvatārasūtra.
