용성스님의 활동 영역은 주로 서울과 남부지역이 중심이었다. 그러나 북부지역에 관심을 가지고 용정에 대각교당을 설립하게 된 배경은 여러 가지 측면에서 살펴볼 수 있으나, 직접적인 인연은 북청의 광산사업과 함흥의 대흥사 염불방 불사에서 시작되었다. 연변 대각교당은 용정지역에 1927년 3월에 시작하여 9월 11일에 봉불식을 하였으며, 당시에는 300여명의 신도를 확보하였다. 용정시내에는 대각교당이 있었고, 농장은 명월촌 일대에 있었으며 규모는 약 7만 내지 8만평도로 보인다. 교당에는 학생회와 신도회 조직까지도 구성되었으며, 지속적인 법회와 넓은 공간을 가졌던 것으로 보인다. 이곳은 단순한 포교당이 아니라 백용성스님의 해외 민족독립운도 지원사업지의 역할을 하였다. 독립운동가들에게 음식과 의복과 자금을 공급하였으며, 그들의 쉼터역할을 하였다. 용성스님은 이곳을 중간기지로 하여 독립자금을 지원하였으며, 여러 가지 정보를 제공하는 장소로도 활용되었다. 그러나 여기에도 일제의 마수가 뻗쳐 난관에 봉착하기도 하였다. 또한 조국을 떠나 살길을 찾는 이주민들에게 삶의 보금자리와 일자리를 제공하였다. 그 운동이 바로 禪農佛敎이다. 받는 불교에서 주는 불교로 변화를 시작하였으며, 생활에 도움을 주는 것이 새로운 불교포교의 방법임을 실험한 곳이다. 이러한 용정 대각교당의 유지관리 및 사상적인 계승은 지속되었지만, 언제까지 유지되었는지는 알 수 없다. 1941년까지 유지 되었으나 해방이후 자산의 문제는 알 수 없다. 정확한 위치 조사와 발굴은 선결과제이다. 앞으로의 문손들이나 정부에 의해 발굴조사 복원하여 그 정신을 계승해야 할 것이다. 이번의 세미나가 그 시발점이 되 길 바란다.
The destiny to establish the Yongjeong Daegakgyo Temple was originated directly from the mining business in Bukcheong and the Buddhist prayer for resembling Buddha in the Daeheungsa Temple in Hamheung. The Yanbian Daegakgyo Temple started in the Yongjeong district in Mar, 1927 and held the Buddha Worship Ceremony on Sep 11, which had secured about 300 believers at that time. Its land is said to have been as large for farming thousands of days or as 70 Hyang (晌), which was owned by the temple for the purpose of farmstead as well. The temple was consisted with the organizations of Students association and believers association, which looks to have had consistent Buddhist services in the large space. The temple was not just a propagation hall but it was the support project site as well for the overseas independence movements of Korean people. It not only supplied the independence campaign workers with food, clothing, and funds, but also played the role of their relaxation site. The Buddhist Priest, Yongseong, had supported the independence campaign fund from the temple as a midway base, which was also used as the place providing diverse information. He also had provided the living nest and jobs for the Korean immigrants seeking the way for living away from the fatherland. His campaign to achieve his goal is so called Seonnongbulgyo [Farming Priority Buddhism]. The temple is where he initiated the change from the receiving Buddhism to the giving Buddhism and practiced the experiment that the aid to livelihood is the new Buddhism propagation method. The maintenance and ideological succession of the Yongjeong Daegakgyo Temple has been continued persistently, but it is not known until when it has been sustained. It had been sustained until 1941, but it is unknown about its property after the liberation. It is the premise to survey and excavate its accurate location. The spirit must be taken over by his grandchildren of the family or by government after excavation, survey, and restoration. I wish that this seminar can be the starting point of the mission.
