摘要
본고는 인간적인 의료의 실현을 위해 불교윤리에 바탕하여 자리이타의 호혜적 의료인－환자 관계를 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 근현대의 생의학은 질병 치료에 있어서 큰 진전을 이루어냈지만, 그 과정에서 질병을 앓으며 고통받는 인간으로부터 멀어졌다는 비판을 받는다. 이에 따라 의료인문학은 의료의 인간화를 모색하며, 의료윤리는 기존의 의료인－환자 관계를 반성하고 바람직한 관계를 제시하고자 한다. 기존의 논의가 서양철학과 서양윤리에 기반한 것이 대다수인데 반해, 본고에서는 불교 윤리에 바탕하여 바람직한 의료인－환자 관계로 자리이타의 호혜적 관계를 제시했다. 이 관계에서 의료인은 환자를 치료하고 돌봄으로써 환자에게 질병 치료와 건강 회복이라는 이익을 줄 뿐만 아니라[利他] 자신도 자기완성의 실현이라는 이익을 얻는다[自利]. 또한 서로의 실존적 불안[苦, duḥkha]을 치유한다는 점에서도 의료인과 환자의 관계는 호혜적이다. 이광수의 사랑, 한용운의 박명, 한승원의 아제아제바라아제와 임권택의 동명 영화 <아제아제바라아제> 등 한국 근현대의 문학과 영화에는 이러한 자리이타의 호혜적 의료인－환자 관계가 구체적으로 형상화되어 있다. 이 관계는 한국인의 문화와 정서에 익숙하고 호소력 있는 관계이며, 바람직한 의료인－환자 관계로서 현대에도 유효하다.
This paper presents a reciprocal medical personnel-patient relationship based on Buddhist ethics for a humane medical care. Although modern and contemporary biomedical science has made tremendous progress in treating diseases, it has received criticism for moving away from addressing human suffering. Accordingly, medical humanities seeks to humanize medical care, and medical ethics reflects on the existing medical personnel-patient relationship to define a desirable relationship. However, most discussions are based on Western philosophy and Western ethics. In this paper, I suggest that a reciprocal relationship between medical personnel and patients based on Buddhist ethics can be desirable and mutually beneficial. In this relationship, patients benefit from disease treatment and recovery and medical personnel benefit from the realization of self-completion. Also, this relationship between medical personnel and patients is reciprocal because they heal each other's existential anxiety(duḥkha). Modern and contemporary Korean literature and movies such as Lee Kwang-soo's Sarang(Love), Han Yong-woon's Bakmyung(Misery), Han Seung-won's Aje Aje Bara Aje, and Lim Kwon Taek’s Come, Come, Come Upward specifically embody the reciprocal medical personnel-patient relationship. This relationship is familiar and appealing to Koreans; cuturally and emotionally and presents a sound and desirable medical personnel-patient relationship.
