摘要
이 글의 목적은 국내의 불교와 의학 관련 연구의 성과를 조사, 분석하고 향후 연구를 전망하는 것이다. 불교와 의학의 친연성에도 불구하고 불교와 의학 관련 연구가 전체 불교학에서 차지하는 비중은 양적으로 적으며, 대부분 2000년대 이후의 성과이고 명상의 치료적 활용에 편중되어 있다. 경전과 논서에 인도의학의 내용을 담고 있는 불교는 불교 고유의 사상을 반영하여 불교의학을 성립시킨다. 국내에서는 이러한 불교의학에 대한 연구 외에 불교와 정신의학, 한의학과의 비교, 융합 연구가 수행되었다. 불교 명상의 치료적 활용에 대한 연구는 2000년대부터 해외에서 연구가 활성화된 이후로 국내에서도 불교학계, 심리학계, 의학계 세 학문 분야에서 최근까지 상당수의 연구가 진행되었으며 이론적, 임상적 연구가 병행되었다. 불교가 삼국시대 전래된 이후 한국 고대의학과 치병 활동에 영향을 준 불교에 대한 연구가 의료사적으로 이루어졌다. 생명의료윤리적으로 낙태, 안락사, 호스피스, 생명공학기술, 장기이식 등에 대한 연구가 수행되었다. 지금까지의 국내 연구성과를 살펴보면, 불교와 의학 관련 연구는 명상의 치료적 활용에 대한 연구에 편중되어 있으며, 불교학계, 심리학계, 의학계의 학제간적 융합 연구가 원활하게 이루어지고 있지 않다. 불교가 생명에 대한 사랑과 존중을 표방하는 종교임에도 불구하고 생명의료윤리에 대한 연구도 빈약하다. 한국불교의 역사가 길고 한국 의학과 치병 활동에 미친 영향이 크지만 이에 대한 연구는 많지 않다. 의학과 마찬가지로 고통의 치유를 목표로 하는 불교와 의학 관련 연구의 비중을 높이고 연구 주제를 다양화할 필요가 있다. 응용불교학 내 하나의 독립적 학문으로서 불교의료인문학을 정립한다면 다양한 주제의 체계적 관리, 효율적인 학문적 교류와 연구 성과 축적이 가능해질 것이다.
This paper aims to investigate research trends related to Buddhism and medicine in Korea. Several studies have been conducted examining medicine in the context of Buddhism, including research on Buddhist medicine and comparative studies investigating Buddhism and psychiatric or oriental medicine. Moreover, many studies have been conducted both theoretically and clinically on the therapeutic use of Buddhist meditation. Historically, research has been done on Buddhism’s influence on ancient Korean medicine and medical practices. Bioethical studies on abortion, euthanasia, biotechnology, and organ transplantation have also been conducted. Although Buddhism is similar to medicine in its aim to overcome suffering, not much research has been produced beyond studies on the therapeutic effects of meditation. Although Buddhism advocates a deep respect for life, research on biomedical ethics as related to Buddhism is lacking. A few studies have compared the long history of Korean Buddhism and its effects on Korean medicine and medical practices. Therefore, I propose the establishment of Buddhist medical humanities as a discipline in both medical humanities and applied Buddhism. By systematically and diversely researching the Buddhist medical humanities, it will be possible to broaden the horizon of Buddhist studies and to collaborate effectively with other disciplines. Furthermore, given humankind’s current circumstances with the rapid spread of infectious diseases, the study of Buddhist medical humanities will theoretically and practically realize Buddhism’s goal of saving sentient beings.
