In this paper I examine ``the objects of cognition`` from the perspective of Buddhist philosophy. ``The objects of cognition`` I refer to here are those that are inter-related to our ``cognitive activity; and our ``cognitive activity`` is in turn related to ``the objects of cognition.`` The Hua-yen Thought, a sub-discipline of Buddhist philosophy adopts ``the theory of dependent arising(緣起論)``, the major premise of Buddhism. All things, including ``the subject of cognition`` and ``the object of cognition``, arise in dependence upon multiple conditions. I suggest the term ``construct-of-dependent-arising(緣起構成體)`` to address everything that arises in dependence upon conditions. This ``construct-of-dependent-arising`` is in effect the actual image of the world. This image of the world, in my view, is interchangeable with the concept of ``the reality of the world.`` In order to perceive the subject and the object of cognition as they are, one needs to investigate the nature of the cognitive process. For this purpose, however, one needs to postulate the subject of investigation albeit hypothetically. The term ``cognitive activity`` I used in the previous paragraph is likewise a postulated concept as well. It is through this postulated ``cognitive activity`` that one can contemplate on ``the subject of cognition`` and ``the object of cognition.`` Hua-yen Thought has traditionally employed four methods of reflective thinking. The first is to postulate the ``constructof- dependent-arising`` although hypothetically; the second is to regard ``the subject of cognition`` and ``the object of cognition`` as unsubstantial emptiness; the third is to consider that ``the subject of cognition`` and ``the object of cognition`` are formed upon ``the cognitive activity``; the fourth is to assume that innumerable ``constructs-of-dependentarising`` are related to one another. These four methods of reflective thinking may enable us to head for a more thorough understanding of ``the reality of the world.`` Nevertheless, ``the reality of the world`` is not a fixed entity. It reconstructs itself every moment. Our reflective thinking needs to continue from one moment to another so as to grasp the fleeting ``construct-of-dependent-arising.``
