摘要
본 연구는 부처님 탄생 2500주년 기념으로 1956년에 스리랑카에서 시작된 빠알리 삼장의 싱할리번역에 대해서 다루고 있다. 본고는 크게 두 가지로 구성되어 있는데 하나는 붓다자얀띠의 번역과 과정에 대한 것이고, 다른 하나는 출판 이후의 평가에 대한 것이다. 스리랑카는 번역을 위한 작업의 일환으로 당시 가장 저명하고 박식한 24명의 승려들로 구성된 편집위원회를 중심으로 빠알리 삼장의 번역을 진행해 나아갔다. 편집위원들의 개별적인 번역작업은 편집위원회, 편집대표 심의를 거쳐 최종적으로 최고 편집심의회의 결정에 의해 출판되었다. 이와 같은 스리랑카의 번역실태를 통한 번역과정의 연구는 현재 국내에서 활발히 진행되는 빠알리 경전의 역경과정에서 간과된 부분을 보완하고, 특징을 살려 보다 체계적인 번역과정을 마련하는데 바람직한 지평이 될 것이다.
This study focuses on the Buddha Jayanti translation project and its problem of administration. Buddha Jayanti, the year 1956 which marked the 2500th anniversary of the birth of the Buddha, was the beginning of new direction in the study and research in Buddhism in Sri Lanka. One of the major projects started as a Buddha Jayanti project is to edit and to translate the Pāli Tripitaka texts into Sinhala. The translation series was called Buddha Jayanti Tripitaka Granthamālā. The Government of Sri Lanka took step to establish special boards for the Buddhist of the island. Venerable Labugama Lankānanda Nākaya Thera was chief editor and president of the board from its inception in 1956 to its completion in 1989. And twenty-four renowned Buddhist monks were selected to delegate this project. The first translation was Pārājikapāli edited and translated by the Venerable Veragada Amaramoli in 1959. In addition to supervising and editing the translations, he translated nine books himself into Sinhala. The text has been collated with several ancient manuscripts and with the edition of Myanmar edition. One of the roles of the translation was to produce a Sinhala edition of the Tripitaka for Sri Lanka Buddhist. However, the style of the translation is archaic Sinhala and the content always represents commentarial interpretation. Therefore, this study shows that translation properly should focus on the understanding of general public.
