摘要
This essay contains historical and comparative analyses of the rituals of protection and empowerment in South Asian Buddhism. It argues that distinctions among the rituals of different Buddhist groups and periods should be examined in the light of both the doctrinal changes within the Buddhist tradition and the religious and political climates in which they developed. It also calls attention to the fact that Buddhist esoteric rites of protection had a dual function, soteriological and mundane.
