메이지유신으로 시작되는 일본 근대기에 불교의 체계적인 학문연구는 인도철학의 이름으로 도쿄대학에서 시작되었다. 곧 일본 근대기에 있어 인도철학은 불교학의 다른 이름으로 사용되고 마침내 인도철학 고유의 학문에 대한 연구로 정착한다. 이렇게 순수한 인도철학은 도쿄대학 내에서 다카쿠스 준지로(高楠順次郞)에 의한 인도철학종교사 강좌가 개설된 것에 연유하는 것이 지금까지의 일반적인 이해였지만, 실제 그 이전에 순수인도철학에 대한 연구와 강의가 이루어진 사실이 새롭게 알려지고 있다. 이러한 사실은 이마니시 준기치(今西順吉) 씨가 3편에 걸친 논문에서 밝히고 있는 것으로, 이 논문에 의거하면 다카쿠스의 강좌가 이루어지기 14, 5년전에 도쿄대학 최초의 일본인 철학과 교수인 이노우에 데츠지로(井上哲次郞)에 의해 인도철학의 강좌가 이루어졌던 것을 알 수 있다. 이노우에 데츠지로는 도쿄대학 개교와 함께 입학하고 제1기 졸업생으로서 독일유학을 거쳐 최초로 도쿄대학 철학과 교수가 되었지만, 그에 대해서는 지금도 상당히 부정적인 평가가 지배적인 것 같다. 하지만 이마니시 씨가 밝히고 있는 논문에 의거하면 특히 그의 독일 유학은 새로운 학문으로서 인도철학을 연구하는 시기이며, 따라서 귀국 후 도쿄대학에서도 인도철학을 강의하고 인도철학의 이해증진에 크게 공헌했다는 사실이 밝혀진다. 본 논문은 이마니시씨의 논문에 대한 소개를 기본으로 하여 일본에서 최초로 강의된 인도철학사에 대한 일면을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 다카쿠스 이전에 일본에서 인도철학사가 강의된 역사적 사실을 분명히 하고, 그 강의의 구체적인 내용을 살펴본다.
A critical and systematical study on the Buddhist thoughts began under the name of course, Indian philosophy in Tokyo University in early Modern Japan departured with the Meiji Innovation. The name of Indian philosophy, used as same as meaning of Buddhist studies in those days in Japan, was slowly being extended to include not only the study of the pure Indian philosophy, but also the study of Buddhist thoughts. According to the general understanding, Takakusu, Junjiro(高楠順次郞) was an important person for making a lecture of the pure Indian Philosophy for the first time in Tokyo Univ.. He contributed to the development of the study of the pure Indian Philosophy as well as Buddhist studies. And Kimura, Taiken(木村泰賢) also wrote an important book on Indian Philosophy and received award from the Institution of Emperial Scholar. The new materials, however, which were made known for the first lecture of history of the pure Indian Philosophy before Takakusu in Tokyo Univ. were found and published in the form of paper by Imanishi, Junkichi(今西順吉). His papers say that the first lecturer of pure Indian Philosophy in Tokyo Univ. was Inoue, Tetsujiro(井上哲次郞) who was the first Japanese professor of Department of Philosophy in Tokyo Univ.. Inoue, Tetsujiro was famous for the collision of the Education and Religion as an important issue of Modern Japanese society, then, the fact of his lecture of Indian Philosophy was forgotten for a long time. Imanishi says that during the six years(1884-1890) of the study in Deuch(Germany), Inoue had studied Indian Philosophy as a new study in Europe and had learned Sanskrit language. Though Inoue’s lectures of the pure Indian Philosophy was forgotten for a long time, we can understand the fact that Inoue played a key role to settle down the study of the pure Indian Philosophy through translating a lots of technical terms about Indian Philosophy into Japanese language contributed to the later scholars to study on Indian Philosophy in Japan.
