L'article s'attache à retracer l'ensemble des faits relatifs à la disparition d'un personnage considéré comme le plus grand saint birman de la fin du XXe siècle. Des tentatives pour empêcher le décès du personnage à celles pour perpétuer sa présence malgré sa disparition, en passant par l'organisation des rites funéraires, on constate, comme l'avait jadis souligné Robert Hertz, que c'est le corps qui est au cœur des représentations et des activités autour de la mort. Qu'il soit dédoublé, objet de cérémonie, conservé ou bien au contraire incinéré, le corps, représentation et prolongement de la personne, est un instrument efficace, bon à penser et bon à manipuler, en ce qu'il permet à la communauté d'avoir prise sur l'inéluctable.
The facts related to the death of the person considered to be the greatest Burmese saint at the end of the 20th century are presented. From the attempts to prevent his death and preserve his presence despite his decease to the organization of funeral ceremonies, the body lies, as Robert Hertz pointed out, at the center of conceptions and activities having to do with death. Whether doubled, used as the subject of rites, preserved or burned, the body - as a representation and extension of the person - is an instrument that, " good to think " and " good to manipulate ", enables the community to have a hold on the inevitable.
