본 논문에서는 『능엄경』에 나타난 본래 청정하고 진공인 본각의 자리에서 만법이 홀생(忽生)과 상속(相續)되는 연유를 살펴보고자 하였다. 본래의 밝은 각(覺)을 허망하게 밝힘으로써 능소(能所)의 무명(無明)이 생기고 이에 따라 분별과 허망한 능력이 생겼다. 분별은 동이(同異)를 낳으니 동이가 서로 발명하여 요란해지고 피로가 생김으로 인해 진로(塵勞)와 번뇌에 쌓인 허망한 세계가 생기게 된다. 풍륜(風輪)이 세계를 집지하여 세계가 상속되고 중생이 동업(同業)을 끌어당겨 태란습화의 윤회를 거듭하며 살(殺), 도(盜), 음(淫)의 업을 서로 주고 받으니 이로써 세계, 중생, 업의 전도가 천류하며 끝남이 없다. 이러한 전도(顚倒)된 현상은 모두 허망한 망견(妄見)으로 생긴 것이니 이를 깨닫고 보리와 열반을 얻으면 다시는 이러한 전도된 천류가 반복되지 않는다. 『능엄경』에서 만법의 홀생과 상속이 모두 각명인 명료지성(明了知性)에서 생긴 망상이 원인이 되어서 얻는 과보임을 본 연구에서 논의하고자 하였다.
In this thesis, it was examined the reason for the Creation (Holl-saeng: 忽生) and Sucession(Sang-sok: 相續) of the myriad things in the place of the original pure and empty enlightenment that appeared in the Nungeom Sutra(楞嚴經). By vainly illuminating the original bright enlightenment, the ignorance of the object was created, resulting in discernment and vain ability. Discernment begets the sameness and difference, and the sameness and difference invents each other, causing noise and fatigue. The myriad things clearly reveals both the aspect of the true emptiness(眞空) and and Being of non-being(妙有). All these inverted phenomena are caused by vain neglect, so if someone realizes this and attains the Bodhi and Nirvana. It was discussed in this study that Creation(Holl-saeng: 忽生) and sucession(Sang-sok: 相續) of all things in Nungeom Sutra(楞嚴經) is a result of Retribution for good or evil deeds generated by the deluded thought.
