摘要
This study of the Fufazang yinyuan zhuan takes up the questions of its provenance, use of sources, themes and motives, reasons for compilation, and later use by Tiantai and Chan writers constructing narratives connecting them to authoritative Indian Buddhist figures. Of particular importance are the themes of the decline of the dharma and the urgent need for Chinese Buddhists to exert themselves in preserving and transmitting the dharma. The later history of the text involves its use and contestation as various Chinese Buddhists developed lists of patriarchs and otherwise attempted to understand their place in the overall sweep of Buddhist history.
