In the history of development of Chinese Buddhism, Nanjing holds a vital position. When Buddhism began to spread in China in the end of Eastern Han Dynasty, Jinling Jian-chu Temple became the first south temple. The Southern Dynasties, when Buddhism became the state religion, Jiankang became the country’s Buddhist center. Various schools of Mahayana and Hinayana established in China include the Sanlun School, Tiantai School and Huayan School are all related with Nanjing. Jinling Porcelain Tower built in Ming Dynasty known by Westerners in the Middle Ages as one of the Seven Wonders of the world. A long history of10times consecrating the Buddha relic made Jinling as the earliest and largest city to bury the sacred objects in China. In history, Nanjing always appeared with appearance of recovery and revitalization of Buddhist culture and become the centre of revival, research and dissemination of Buddhist culture in modern China. We can say that Nanjing is China’s wel-l deserved Buddhist capital.
