摘要 | Debate narratives found in biographical and historical materials constitute a promising source for the study of the actual practice of debate both in the Indian and Tibetan traditions. This paper investigates the account of a debate opposing the renown Tibetan Buddhist master Sa skya Paṇḍita Kun dga’ rgyal mtshan (1182–1251) to a group of Indian non-Buddhist teachers based on the biography composed by one of Sa skya Paṇḍita’s disciples, lHo pa kun mkhyen. The argumentative statements attributed to Sa skya Paṇḍita are analyzed from a rhetorical and a logical point of view — the paper traces a plausible source for the core argument in the Madhyamakahṛdayakārikā and Tarkajuālā — and evaluated in view of Sa skya Paṇḍita’s theory of argumentation. In the conclusion, we discuss the likelihood that lHo pa’s narrative relates a historical event, and to what extent his account can be deemed representative of face-to-face debate in thirteenth-century Tibet. |
