Taiwan was under Japanese rule in 1895. Japanese Buddhist came to preach in Taiwan, then cooperated with local Buddhist. In this period, Taiwan had 8 Buddhism divisions and 14 departments. Pure land Buddhism (Jodokyou) is no.2. Pure land Buddhism missionaries in the army Hayashi Genmei came to Taiwan and preach Buddhism in June, 1895. Then divided two branches, Seisanha and Chinzeiha. Chinzeiha built Dou-liu temple in 1902, the first temple in Yunlin & Chiayi. In the end of Japanese colonial time, there were 11 Jodokyu temples here, 9 are Chinzeiha and 2 are Seisanha.
