원불교는 ‘법신불일원상’을 본존으로 모시고, 이를 신앙의 대상과 수행의 표본으로 삼고 있다. 이 때 법신불은 소태산이 깨달은 ‘일원상진리’그 자체를 불(佛)로 본 것으로서, 그것은 삼신불 중의 하나인 협의의 법신불뿐만 아니라, 이ㆍ지ㆍ비가 충만한 삼신일체의 광의의 법신불을 의미한다. 원불교에서는 이를 다양한 이름으로 부르고 있는바, 이 가운데 신앙대상으로서 가장 일반화되어 있는 것은 ‘법신불사은’이다. 이와 관련하여 수년전 ‘법신불사은’의 호칭에 대한 재고론이 제기되면서 십 수 차례의 논란이 거듭되었으나, 아직도 미해결의 교학적 과제로 남아있다. 원불교의 개교 100주년을 맞아 ‘법신불사은’을 중심으로 한 원불교신앙론에 대해 보다 깊은 검토가 절실히 요청되는 시점이다. 법신불 그 자체의 성격과 내용은 물론, 특히 사은과의 관계 및 그에 따라 제기되는 사은의 불신론적 위상과 신앙적 의미, 나아가 자성불과의 관계 등에 관하여 보다 심도 있는 교리해석학적 검토가 요청된다. 필자 또한 이 문제와 관련하여 법신불사상의 발달사를 중심으로 수십년 동안 그 해답을 찾기 위해 노력해왔으나, 아직도 개인의 주관적 이해 차원을 넘어서지 못하고 있다. 그런데 이 문제는 바로 ‘본체와 현상’의 관계에 관한 문제로서, 인류정신사를 통해 수천년 동안 논의해왔으나 아직도 쉽게 결론짓기 어려운 종교철학적 과제로 남아있다. 본고 또한 이 문제에 대한 접근의 하나로서 불신론적 조명을 통해 이 문제를 검토해보고자 한다. 본고의 전개는 먼저 불교신앙발달사 상에 전개되어온 제불신관을 살펴보고, 그러한 바탕위에서 원불교의 ‘법신불’개념과 ‘법신불과 사은’의 관계, 및 ‘사은’그 자체 등에 관하여 불신론적 관점에서 조명해 보고자 한다. 그리하여 원불교의 ‘법신불일원’이 불신론상에 있어 지니는 의의와 특징, 그리고 그와 관련하여 제기되는 과제들을 검토하여 봄으로써 이상적인 원불교신앙관의 정립과 방향 모색에 일조를 얻고자 한다.
Won-Buddhism enshrines the‘Dharma-ka-yaBuddha Il-Won-Sang’as the main Buddha and considers it the object of faith and the model of practice. In this context, Dharma-ka-ya Buddha means that Sotaesan’s enlightenment of ‘Il-Won-Sang Truth’itself is regarded as Buddha, which does not only mean one of trika-yas, but also signifiesDharma-ka-ya Buddha in broad sense forming a trinity fulfilled with principle, wisdom and compassion.In Won-Buddhism, it is referred by various names, and the most commonly used name is‘Dharma- ka-ya BuddhaFourfold Grace,’which is generally used in religious rituals and individual faith and practice. In this regard, debates on the suggestion for reconsideration of name of ‘Dharma-ka-ya Buddha Fourfold Grace’have repeatedly been raised and continued discussion more than dozen occasions; howeverthe challenge still remain as an unresolved doctrinal task of Won-Buddhism. I have also kept in mind for the necessity of much intensified studies on the theory of faith in Won-Buddhism focusing on Dharma-ka-ya Buddha and Fourfold Grace. Especially in the studies on‘Fourfold Grace’, it is considered to be required to deeper investigation for itsrelation with Dharma-ka-ya Buddha, its position and religious status in the perspective of Buddha-ka-ya theory, and furthermore its relation with self-natureBuddha. To find those answers, I have kept examining and investigating the Dharma-ka-ya Buddha theory of Won- Buddhism focused on the theoretical history of the view of Buddha and the theory of Buddha-ka-yafor 30 years, however, the results of research still there are aspects that cannot be overcome with mypersonal subjective level of understanding. The issue of the relation between‘phenomenon and noumenon’has been studied for thousands of years in the history of humanity, yet its definite answer still remains as a religious philosophical task. In my opinion, it may be necessary to review this matter from the perspective of the Buddha-ka-yatheory as an approach method. This research, as a kind of such attempt, reviews the religious meanings embedded in variousBuddha-ka-yatheoriesin the history of development of Buddhist faith; then, depending on its basis, discusses the concept of Dharma- ka-ya Buddha, the relationship between the Dharma-ka-ya Buddha andFourfold Grace, and the Fourfold Grace itselffrom the aspect of the Buddha-ka-yatheory. Thispaper aims to establish and to find a way to explore the ideal faith of Won-Buddhism by reviewing the meanings and characteristics of the ‘Dharma-ka-ya Buddha Il-Won’in the Buddha-ka-yatheory and examining related issues and tasks.
