본고는 선어록에 나타난 집[家, house]에 대한 상징 및 그 의미를 주제로 한다. 집이란 사람들이 밖에서 일을 하고, 내부로 들어와 휴식을 취하는 공간이다. 불교에서는 집에 대한 개념이 매우 많으며, 각 당우(堂宇)‧전각(殿閣)‧전당(殿堂)‧법당(法堂)‧불전(佛殿) 전각(殿閣) 등 여러 용어로 쓰이고 있다. 특히 선종에서는 집이 종파를 지칭하거나 개인을 말하기도 하며, 머무는 장소 등 여러 의미로 활용되고 있다. 본고에서 논하는 집은 깨달음의 본성이나 근원, 경지 등을 말한다. 대승불교 초기경전인 『유마경』‧『법화경』‧『화엄경』등에는 집이 본래 깨달아 있다는 본각(本覺)‧本來成佛(본래성불) 측면을 상징하고 있다. 반면 대승불교 중기경전인 『여래장경』‧『열반경』 등에는 여래장(如來藏)‧불성(佛性)인 깨달음의 본성 차원에서 ‘집’에 비유하고 있다. 이렇게 대승불교의 본각과 불성 사상을 토대로 정립된 선사상은 당대(唐代) 중기에 형성된 선어록에도 그대로 표현되고 있다. 조사선‧간화선의 어록에는 집이라고 표현하면서 수행자로서 돌아가야 할 고향의 집이나 자성(自性)의 안신입명처(安身立命處)를 상징하고 있다. 또한 송나라 때 등장한 십우도에서 집을 깨달음의 경지로 표현하고 있다.
This article investigates the symbol and meaning of house (家) in Seoneorok or Seon Dialogues. In common sense, a house refers to the space where people go to work outside and return to take rest. In Buddhism, house encompasses various concepts, also referred to by various terms as Dangwoo (堂宇) or Jeonggak (殿閣). In particular, in Seonjong, house can refer to a sect, an individual, a place of residence, and more. The house discussed in this article signifies the nature or source of enlightenment, or the path. The early scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism, such as "Yumagyeong," "Beophwagyeong" and "Hwaeomgyeong," describe that The house symbolizes the innate enlightenment or intrinsic Buddhahood. On the other hand, in the middle age scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism, such as "Yeoraejanggyeong" and "Yeolbangyeong," describe a house in terms of the nature of enlightenment, which is Yeoraejang (如來藏) and Bulseong (佛性, Buddha nature). Seonsasang (禪思想) established based on Bongak(本覺) and Bulseong of Mahāyāna Buddhism is also represented identically in Seoneorok, which was written in the mid Dang (唐) Dynasty. In the dialogues of from Josaseon and Ganhwaseon, a house is described as the hometown a monk should return to or a Ansinibmyeongcheo (安身立命處) of Jaseong (自性).
