범일의 전기를 전하는 조당집의 ｢범일전｣에는 범일이 명주도독의 초청으로 강릉의 굴산사로 옮겨온 후로는 줄곧 굴산사에 주석한 것으로 되어 있다. 그러나 범일을 계승한 제자 개청의 비문에는 개청이 범일을 찾아갔을 때, 그가 오대산에 머물고 있었음이 확인된다. 또 15세기 자료인 임영지 <범일>에는 범일이 오대산에서 태어나 오대산에서 입적했다는 내용이 적혀 있다. 즉 범일과 오대산의 관계는 범일의 생존 시부터 조선 전기까지 계속 이어지고 있는 것이다. 본고는 범일과 오대산의 관계를 중심으로 주변 상황을 검토하고자 한다. 이를 통해서 먼저 범일의 사굴산문이 영동(嶺東)으로 확대되고, 이후 영서(嶺西)로 영향권으로 둔다는 점을 분명히 했다. 또 <개청비문>을 검토하여 범일이 오대산에 머문 시기가 864-867년 무렵임을 밝혔다. 또 선불교 교화 시기에 신라 안에서의 선불교 인식을 범일을 중심으로 검토했다. 그리고 범일에게는 앞선 세대의 고승인 자장의 영향이 존재한다는 점과, 자장계 불교를 통합하려는 노력이 강하게 작용한다는 점을 드러냈다. 이는 강릉을 중심으로 하는 명주불교를 주도해야 했던(州師: 명주의 스승) 범일로서는 당연한 행보라고 하겠다. 이로 인해 오대산과 관련해서는 개청 외에도 신의와 신경이라는 초기 범일계를 주도한 승려들이 나타나는 모습이 나타나게 된다.
According to in Jodangjip, which conveys Beomil's biography, Beomil was invited by Myeongju Dodok to move to Gulsansa Temple in in Gangneung and resided ever since. However, the epitaph of Gaecheong, the disciple who succeeded Bumil, confirms that he was staying at Mt. Odaesan when GaeChoeng visited Bumil. Also, according to in Imyeongji, chronicles of Imyeong of 15th century. Beomil was born and passed away in Mt. Odaesan. In other words, the relationship between Beomil and Mt. Odaesan continued from the time of Beomil’s life until the early Joseon Dynasty. This paper seeks to review the surrounding situation, focusing on the relationship between Beomil and Mt. Odaesan. Through this, it confirms that Beomil’s Sagulsanmun was first expanded to the Yeongdong, and later to the Yeongseo. In addition, from the review on Gaecheong epitaph, it reveals that Beomil stayed in Mt. Odaesan between 864 and 867. Furthermore, it examines the perception of Zen Buddhism in Silla during the Seon Buddhism reformation period, focusing on Beomil. It also reveals that Beomil was influenced by Jajang, a prominent monk of the previous generation, and that there was a strong effort to integrate the Buddhism of Jajang lineage. This can be said to be a natural move for Beomil, who had to lead Myeongju Buddhism centered in Gangneung as a Jusa (teacher) of Myeongju. This, in relation to Mt. Odaesan, results in the emergence of the monks who led the early Beomil lineage including Shinui and Shingyeong in addition to Gaecheong.
