The 16th century is known as the period of Buddhism abolished by the government as well as the dark age of Buddhist activities. But the latest research has found that the 16th century was the period of confusion and conflict in terms of the routes of policies on Buddhism. In the reign of Jungjong and Seonjo known as the period of suppression on Buddhism, seungjeong system -seongyoyangjong- was abolished while reformative policies on Buddhism was pursued, so the Buddhist sector were neglected and abandoned with no official support or control. The Buddhist sector were maintained through the royal family’s secret support and private economic grounds, and the Buddhist temples published Buddhist scriptures prevalently nationwide. Therefore, it is needed to examine through detailed case study what the Buddhist sector actually were like in the 16th century and how the history of Buddhism developed in Joseon. Songgwangsa is a Buddhist temple affiliated to seongyoyangjong, the seungjeong system in the 15th century. It is a Buddhist temple closely associated with the central Buddhist circles to maintain constant influence and tradition of thought. From the 16th century, seungjeong system was abolished, and the official relationship between the government and Buddhist circles was disconnected. In that situation, the Buddhist sector both maintained and secured private economic grounds in each of the Buddhist temples and transmitted the tradition of thought selectively. This can be observed with the phenomenon that in the early 16th century, the publishing of Buddhist scriptures increased enormously. Songgwangsa published Incheonanmok in 1529 and Jonggyeongchwalyo, Simyobeopmun, and Daehyebogakseonsaseo in 1531. The publishing of Buddhist scriptures proves that Songgwangsa was sound also in the early 16th century thanks to consistent economic grounds, and also, the trends of publishing imply that it transmitted the tradition of thought diversely. It is one of the noticeable cases that Jingak Hyesim published Jonggyeongchwalyo in that period at Songgwangsa which was published in Suseonsa in 1213. In the late 16th century, the reign of Seonjo, Buddhist temples’ publishing of Buddhist scriptures increased tremendously nationwide once again, and this was so in Songgwangsa.
