이 글에서는 천태의 지관수행법을 소개하고 그것의 현대적 의미에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. Ⅱ장에서는 25방편을 살펴보는데, 25방편은 천태지관에서 예비적 수행에 해당한다. 이 25방편은 크게 3부분으로 접근할 수 있다. 그것은 총론에 해당하는 부분, 부정적인 마음을 다스리는 것, 긍정적인 덕목을 개발하는 것이다. 25방편에서 ‘수행의 구체성’ 을 읽을 수 있다. Ⅲ장에서는 4종류 삼매에 대해 알아본다. 4종류 삼매는 삼매를 외적형식에 근거해서 구분한 것이다. 그리고 그 실질적 내용은 좌선수행, 염불수행, 밀교적수행, 형식에 구애받지 않은 수행을 포함하는 것이다. 4종류 삼매에서 ‘수행의 포용성’ 을 파악할 수 있다. Ⅳ장에서는 십경십승관법에 대해 검토한다. ‘십경’은 관조할 대상으로 10가지를 제시한 것인데, 이는 지관을 닦다가 문제점이 드러나면 대비하기 위해 제시된 것이다. 그리고 ‘십승관법’은 관조하는 10가지 방법이다. 앞에 소개한 ‘십경’에 대해 ‘십승관법’을 실천하는 것이 십경십승관법이다. 이 십경십승관법에서 ‘수행의 엄밀성’을 파악할 수 있다. 그리고 천태지관의 수행법에서 제시된 핵심적 관점은 현대의 수행법이 추구해야 할 내용을 포함하고 있다고 생각된다.
In this article, I will introduce Tiantai’s śamatha-vipaśanā practice and examine its modern meaning. Chapter 2 examines 25 expedients, and 25 expedients correspond to preliminary practice in Tiantai’s śamatha vipaśanā practice. These 25 expedients can be broadly approached in three parts. That is the general part, controlling negative mind and developing positive virtues. We can read concreteness of practice in 25 expedients. In chapter 3, we examine four kinds of samādhi. Four kinds of samādhi are classified based on the external form of samādhi. And its practical content includes sitting meditation practice, chanting practice, esoteric practice, and practice that is not limited by format. We can see inclusiveness of practice in four kinds of samādhi. In Chapter 4, we review ten objects ten vehicle meditation. Ten objects presents 10 objects to contemplate, which are presented to prepare for when problems are revealed while practicing śamatha-vipaśanā. And ten vehicle meditation is 10 methods of contemplating. Practicing ten vehicle meditation about ten objects to introduce earlier is ten objects ten vehicle meditation. We can see rigorousness of practice in this ten objects ten vehicle meditation. And I think that the essential perspective presented in Tiantai’s śamatha-vipaśanā practice includes the content that modern practice should pursue.
