聖嚴法師佛教教育理念與實踐 -- 以中華佛學研究所為例(1965-1991)=The Buddhist Educational Ideal and Practice of Venerable Sheng-yen -- as Illustrated in Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies
本論文的焦點在於探討聖嚴法師的佛教教育理念與實踐的具體內容與方法,以及其對台灣乃至整體的中國佛教所產生的可能影響與貢獻。其中又以聖嚴法師在擔任佛學研究所所期間,對其個人的教育理念的落實為主要的研究範圍,探討其在中國佛教高等教育的理念與推動歷程。聖嚴法師的佛教教育理念包含兩個不同的時期與方向,且以留日為分界點。留日以前,法師重視僧教育的推動,希望培養具有宗教情操、博學經世、宏觀胸襟、持守戒律的出家僧才,再以此具有國際視野的僧才進一步推動佛教整體的教育。留日以後則更進一步強調培養高水準的佛教學術人才,以高等的佛教人才培養出丈多佛教各方面的僧俗人才。在擔任佛學研究所所長期間,透過對辦學支持者教月理念的傳達與釐清、內部行政組織制度的建立、提供完善的學習環境、重視培養以道心為重的學風、國際學術合作交流等的實?行為,在現實環境中逐步突破困境、建設其理想中,即符合國際學術研究機構的規模與水準,同時更具體佛教中解行並重的宗教特色的中華佛學研究所。 This paper explores the concrete methods and ideas of Master Sheng-yen’s conception and practice of Buddhist education, and those possibly influence and contribute to Taiwan, or even the whole Chinese Buddhism. The main focus of this paper is how Master Sheng-yen put his personal educational conceptions into practice when he served as the principal of The Chung Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies. And it explores the conception and the process of the movement in advanced Chinese Buddhist education. Master Sheng-yen’s conception of Buddhist education contains of two different ways and periods of time, which is demarcated by studying in Japan. Before studying in Japan, Master Sheng-yen put emphasis on the impetus of education of Sangha. He hoped to cultivate bhikkhus to have noble though is and feelings of religion, outstanding intelligence and practice of sutras, great foresight, and serve abidance of disciplines. Therefore, these bhikkhus who have great international points of view can put the whole education of Buddhism into action. After studying in Japan, he still put the stress more on cultivating advanced Buddhist academic talents, and then they can cultivate more bhikkhus and laymen from different areas of Buddhism. By communicating the educational conceptions with the supports who would like to run the school, establishing the system of internal administrational organization, providing the perfect environment for studying, emphasizing the style of and cooperating with intrnational academies, Master Sheng-yen, as the principal of The Chung Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies, gradually broke through the predicaments in the realistic environment and built The Chung Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies which fits the scope and standard of international academic research institutions and also realizes the distinguishing feature of Buddhism-emphasizing both on studying and practicing.
