Barom Kagyu ('Bar rom Bka' brgyud) is one of the four main sub-schools growing from the Dagpo Kagyu (Dwags po Bka' brgyud) lineage, which was founded by Gampopa (Sgam po pa, 1079-1153). It was initiated by 'Bar rom Dar ma dbang phyug (1127-1199), then further spread to Kham area through the effort of his most important disciple, Tishi Ras pa (1164/5-1236). Because of the internal family feud in later period, its influence in Tibetan Buddhism was disintegrating through the years. Now, it only survives with six monasteries in the Nangchen area of Qinghai Province, mainly lead by theTshang gsar family. This paper is to introduce the history of this degenerating lineage and its present situation.
