In the long course of indigenization, Chinese Buddhism has taken on some distinct features and cultural spirit of its own apart from Indian Buddhism. What characteristics does Chinese Buddhist thought possess?How have these characteristics been formed? What impact has it had on Chinese culture and society? What is the essence of Chinese Buddhist culture? Regarding these questions, different people have different insights and perspectives. However, an exploration into these questions constitutes a meaningful endeavor and contributes to our knowledge of Chinese Buddhism and even the overall traditional culture of China. It also enhances our understanding of the historical value and contemporary relevance of Chinese Buddhist culture. Based on the relevant views of the academic circle as well as the author’s own research, this article attempts to summarize, from nine different angles, the essential characterics and the humanatarian spirit of Chinese Buddhist thought.
