摘要
For at least a thousand years, Buddhist doctrines, practices and institutions have played a prominent role I bridge construction in China. Of particular importance is the belief,a notion that can be traced back to early Indian Buddhist texts. Records of bridged disclose that this Buddhist belief exerted an influence on building in china from at least the sixth century. From the Song to the late Qing, extensive records of bridge construction reveal the persistent presence of the doctrine of Buddhist merit in the building of Chinese bridges.
Local officials were charged with maintaining bridges in their jurisdiction, but were not allocated funds to do so. For this reason, they frequently turned to monks in the community to of association between social roles (monks, officials, local elites),religious doctrine, and administractive structure proved remarkably resilient throughout late Imperial Chinese history, contributing to the construction of countless bridges in all parts of china. In my paper,I outline the formation and development of this "cultural figuration" in the history of Chinese bridges.
