摘要
A visit to Buddhist cave sculptures at Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, is described. The silent figures, and especially their smiles, represent the clarity and peace attained in Madhyamika Buddhism in which all is charged with emptiness and compassion. This is not a peace of resignation, but rather of having seen through everything without refutation or argument. The figures represent the purity of Asian tradition, needing nothing but needed by everyone, including Asians, in the modern world.
