摘要Western thought is questioning the notion of the self as independent center of self-interest in a "marketplace" of success and profit. This self's ability to dehumanize others, fundamental to capitalism,is opposed to the "liberated self" discussed by Buddhism. Yet Western thought includes a distinctive ethical and future-oriented dimension. Perhaps abandonment of the self-encapsulated ego to a self constituted by its relationships allows the "ethical" and "eschatological" to break into human awareness. In Wittgenstein, for example, but also in Kant,Kierkegaard, and Marx, this ethical,future-oriented dimension underlines our human possibilities for realizing a liberated world.
