摘要 | In this paper four classical Indian approaches to language and world have been compared with some Western analytical approaches. The Vaisesika approach according to which the realms of real, knowables and nameables are co-extensive is found similar to Meinong's approach. The Buddhist approach according to which the basic particulars constituting reality cannot be captured by language,is found comparable with, though different from the views of Russell and Wittgenstein. The Jaina approach according to which language is essentially imprecise and relative is found comparable with the view of Gilbert Ryle. The two models of the Carvaka approach 1) that of empirical testability 2) that of conformity to common sense, are found similar to the views of logical positivists and G E Moore respectively. |
