第四屆中華國際佛學會議 -- 「佛教與廿一世紀」, 法鼓山中華佛學研究所主辦, 2002年1月18-20日, 中央研究院學術活動中心. The Fourth Chung Hwa International Conference on Buddhism:The Role of Buddhism in the 21st Century, Organized by Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies, DDMBA; January 18-20, 2002, Auditorium of Acemic Activity Center, Acemia Sinica.
The globalization movement has been underway for quite some time, but it came to a turning point in the 20th century. There have been both positive and negative appraisals of this movement. Those who approve it hold that globalization gives the world a new opportunity for increased open trade and cultural exchange. Those who criticize it point out that economic globalization brings with it an exacerbation of the difference in levels of wealth, making the more economically disadvantaged countries further lose their political and cultural autonomy.
In reality, the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11,2001,provide the most critical warning to date of the failures of globalization. For the WTC was the center of economic globalization, and most of the people killed in the attack were world leaders in the economic globalization. If globalization is an inevitable trend, what becomes of the identity of human subjectivity in this process? Have human becomes happier, more harmonious and more profound,or the contrary?
The author holds that although globalization is a necessary trend,it carries within it many variables. Fundamentally, globalization remains an as yet indeterminate road. Buddhism is a religion that emphasizes awakening the self and awakening others. In the face of the trend toward globalization, will Buddhism just follow the trend,or will it develop the power of introspection and correction on the basis of its own lofty wisdom? This is a big question faced by Buddhism today. Especially because of the closeness of globalization and universalism, the Buddhist world itself faces a crisis of its own. Moreover,in the face of marginalization of its own practices of cultivation, the McDonaldization of Enlightenment, the commercialization of its holy sites, and the alienation of its teachers and propagators? These are even greater challenges.
Buddhism has always insisted that "there are 84,000 different paths to enlightenment." This is because the spirit of Buddhism is equipped with a high level of flexibility allowing it to adapt to di
