This article is a report on recent (1995-2001) Pali studies. It trys to continue what K.R. Norman’s article did in 1994 (“The present state of Pali studies, and future tasks”). I am not only introducing PTS materials, but also other English language publications known to me. And I also report on Japanese and Chinese published (and a few not yet published) materials. In this article, like Prof. K.R. Norman’s article mentioned above, it will be dealing with “Pali studies” in a narrow sense, i.e., “Pali philology”. Therefore I will be covering connected topics, introducing (1) the recent PTS Pali editions, and (2) English translations of Tipitakas, parts of Atthakathas and Tikas, and some postcanonical texts, including PTS, Wisdom, BPS, BPA, and DPPS. In addition, this article introduces (3) new Japanese translations and (4) Chinese translations. In the Chinese translations I try to include all the modern translations known to me, including translations from Japanese translations and even from Thai translations. (5) This article also introduces the reference materials which would aid the read of Pali texts, including grammars, dictionaries, guides to literature, readers, and indices.
