摘要Indian teachers figure prominently in the early history of Tibetan Buddhism. In the eighth century, the Indian monk Kamalashila was invited by King Trisong Detsen to follow up on the work of Kamalashila's teacher,Shantarakshita. Upon his arrival in Tibet,he engaged in a famous debate with the Chinese teacher Hwa Shang Mahayana, in which Kamalashila put forth his view of the gradual path in opposition to Hwa Shang's espousal of sudden realization. Who won this debate-or indeed whether this debate can be won at all-remains a matter of debate. Regardless, Kamalashila composed an influential text on the gradual path known as the Stages of Meditation in the Middle Way School, which became an integral part of the Tibetan canon. In the spring of 1988 and the fall of 1989,Thrangu Rinpoche presented fifteen talks on this work at Naropa University in Boulder,Colorado. Translator Jules Levinson has edited these talks with an eye to maintaining the flavor of the original presentation, and the result is a richly detailed commentary on Kamalashila's text with a tangible feel for how Thrangu Rinpoche imparts the teachings.
