Mogao Cave 85 was built during the period from the third to the eighth year of the Xiantong era by Zhai Farong to celebrate his promotion to chief official of the Buddhist administration.In the middle of the ninth century when Cave 85 was under construction,Chan was popular in the Dunhuang area.Zhai Farong was a high-ranking monk who followed both the Southern and Northern Schools of Chan,so the statues and murals of Cave 85 reflect his religious ideas.This paper mainly discusses the ideas embodied in Cave 85，which gave prominence to the Chan，the mixture of Chan and Pure Land，and the teachings of different schools.
