Buddhism; Schism; Intellectual freedom; Critical thinking; Buddha (The concept); Hinayana Buddhism
摘要
The article focuses on the dissension, schism and division experienced by Buddhism. Four reasons are presented involving the freedom of thought and critical thinking, the strong tradition of scholastic activity, rivalry from contemporary teachers and from within Buddha's own fold, and the oral handing down of Buddha's teachings without central control or authority. The gradual devaluation of the spiritual significance of the Arahant is discussed along with the objection to the term Hinayana.
