摘要 當今世界的人類文明已嚴重地傾向物質主義,人類往物質文明強勢發展引導了人類對外在物質欲望的無止境地追求,其結果是造成戰爭、衝突不斷乃至全球生態環境之破壞日益嚴重。為了矯正人類文明偏於物質化文明發展之導向,重視心靈之價值,或可提昇人類自覺、自醒與心靈淨化之能力,人類才有可能享有真正的幸福與快樂。「禪佛教」根源於印度,產生於中國,它蛻去了許多傳統形式主義與宗教儀式,且早已跨越時空傳遍了中、日、韓及越南等之東方世界。它的觀念與方法很適於也能幫助當代西方人用來體驗心靈之自由與喜悅。聖嚴法師在西方弘揚漢傳禪佛教三十年,無非為以禪法為內涵來建立起全球性心靈價值。本論文除了以文獻學的角度來探討聖嚴法師的禪學思想之外,也運用深入訪談之質性研究來進一步的驗證。本論文以聖嚴法師建立「中華禪法鼓宗」及推動全球性心靈環保運動為範圍。本研究結果呈現:(一)在東西方之不同的文化體系之下,展現著東西方人有著不同的「心性」;(二)聖嚴法師對東西方之不同文化與心性之看法;(三)聖嚴法師弘揚漢傳禪佛教於東西方之不同地域時,其教學方法的同異性。

In our modern world,due to the current development of human civilization—which has been leaning heavily towards materialism,largely influenced by western ideologies — people spend their lives in the endless pursuit of material things. Consequently,there has been an increase in the number of wars,conflicts,and environmental degradation.In order to overcome this,we must place importance on the value of spirituality,the uplifting of the human character through self-awareness,self-cultivation,and self-purification.In this way,we can readjust the direction of civilization,so as to allow humankind to be able to enjoy real blessings and happiness."Chan Buddhism",which originated from India and emerged in China having shed much of the formalism and ceremony of traditional religions,presents a very practical way of spirituality,and therefore it is very adaptable to the modern world.Throughout history,it can be seen that because of its adaptability,Chan Buddhism has transcended the barriers of time and space,and spread throughout the Eastern world,including India,China,Vietnam,Japan and Korea.The practicality of Chan Buddhism is very suitable for modern Western people,who appreciate its direct concepts and methods that can help them experience true freedom and the joy of spirituality.Master Sheng Yen has been promoting Chinese Chan Buddhism in the Western world for three decades,and has used the teachings of Chan Buddhism as a basis to establish spiritual values of a global nature.In addition to a literary review of Master Sheng Yen’s Chan thought,the authors utilize in-depth interview qualitative research to examine the practicality of Chan.The scope of this paper consists of Master Sheng Yen’s establishment of "Chinese Chan Buddhism’s Dharma Drum Lineage" and his promotion of global "Spiritual Environmentalism".The research outcomes indicate:(1) there are two different kinds of Mind and Intrinsic Nature(心性)existing in the Eastern and Western worlds amidst the backdrops of two different cultures;(2) Master Sheng Yen’s viewpoints of two different cultures which cultivate different Mind and Intrinsic Nature in the Eastern and Western worlds respectively;and(3) the similarities and differences of Master Sheng Yen’s teaching methods while spreading the Chinese Chan Buddhism in the East and the West.
