We have already had many achievements on the biographical studies on Ven. Yin-shun and Ven. Sheng-yan, whom have been respected as the two masters on "the Buddhism in the Human Realm" in Taiwan, and have been seeing the rapid development of the studies. But, we cannot deny here is still a big lack because rare people know the life of Mr. USHIBA Shingen, whom is regarded as the best one who understands the thought and works of Ven.Yin-shun and as a good Japanese language teacher of Ven. Sheng-yan. This Buddhist scholar who had left this world for almost 40 years, and we now have few biographical dates about him. Under such a poor condition, we still remember that when he reached the full age of 79, he spent only 4 months translate "The History of Chinese Chan Buddhism" into Japanese. As a result of this important academic help, he gave the doctoral degree to Ven. Yin-shun, the author of this work, making him the first one to receive Japanese doctoral degree in the world of Chinese Buddhism. To our good fortune, Mr. USHIBA wrote many papers to some academic periodicals; almost all of them are easily searched at the libraries; some of them are still published now. In this paper, the author not only wants to introduce the content of his paper, but also wants to catch the real image of this Japanese scholar, whom is more praised and researched by the people belonging to the world of Taiwanese Buddhism, according to some biographical dates on him, few like stars in the dawn sky.
