The remains of Buddhist art are located on the southern side of Western Peak of theLiugong Mountain to the northwest of Dongping county in Shandong. A total of forty-sev-en icons are found in eight niches and two side ones horizontally carved on a cliff wall mea-suring 12 by 2.2m. There are eighteen inscriptions, of which eight dated ones are from theperiod between the 3rd year of the Chang’an reigh(703)and the 14th year of the Xiantongreigh(873). According to the inscriptions, the major deity here is Amitabha, who was wor-shipped by the Pure Land sect popular during the Tang dynasty. A hitherto little knownsite of Buddhist art from the high Tang period, its discovery in Shandong will cast newlight on the distribution of the then Buddhist sculpture around the country.
